In many cultures, the end of October and the first of November were times to honor the departed ancestors and family members. Rather than perpetuate the memories of funerals and sadness, it is better to remember the living people and happy times. To make an ancestor altar, gather all the photos you have of the deceased. Put these in appropriately sized frames and arrange them on a shelf or a small table. If you know what color these loved ones preferred, make a tiny ribbon bow of that color and tape it to the picture frame. You might also include small personal mementos if you have them. Each day, for a few minutess, burn a white candle nearby to help send your love to those who have gone into Summerland and to bring their messages to you. Look at the photos often, remembering only the happy times. Even though you may feel foolish at first, spend time telling your ancestors and loved ones about your everyday life and what's happening. Ask for their guidance and help. If these people appear in your dreams with messages, be sure to thank them. -By D. J. Conway |
